George B. Hernández, Jr., JD, served as legal counsel to the Bexar County Hospital District d/b/a University Health from 1990 until 2004 and President/Chief Executive Officer from January 1, 2005 until July 1, 2024. Prior to joining University Health, he served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of San Antonio and as Chief of the Civil Section of the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.
Throughout his career Hernández has served on various local and State boards including the Board of Trustees for The Center for Health Care Services; The board of Ascension DePaul Services; The “Code Red Task Force on Access to Health Care in Texas; The Texas Medicaid Advisory Committee; and has chaired the boards of both the Teaching Hospitals of Texas and the Texas Hospital Association. He currently serves on the boards of St. Mary’s University; the Center for Health Empowerment for South Texas; the Hope at Heart Foundation; Texas Public Radio and El Camino de los Tejas NHT Association.
He has received numerous recognitions for his legal, administrative and community work. They include an Hidalgo from Bexar County Commissioners Court; The Bert Ford Commendation from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for his efforts in reducing the incidence of drinking and driving; The Transformational Leadership Award from the American Hospital Association and CHIME; The Frank M. Adams Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service from the Texas Council of Community Centers; Recognition as a Top 25 Minority Executives in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare Magazine; The Corporate Steward of the Year award from the Alamo Area Council of Governments; The Reynaldo G. Garza Lifetime Achievement Award from the State Bar of Texas, Hispanic Issues Section, for addressing access to justice in the practice of law; The St. Vincent de Paul Servant Leadership Award from Ascension DePaul Services; The Earl M. Collier Award from the Texas Hospital Association; The Living the Chaminade Legacy Award from his alma mater, St. Mary’s University; The Greater San Antonio Chamber Pathfinder Award; The Dream Maker Award from Texas A&M -San Antonio; The Texas Society of Architects Cornerstone Award for outstanding contributions that enhance the quality of life by elevating architecture and the arts; and Lifetime Achievement Awards from both the San Antonio Business Journal and BioMedSA.
Hernández earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s University and law degree from The George Washington University School of Law in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Philosophical Society
of Texas.
