Center for Health Empowerment in South Texas

Project Coordinator

Sofia Castro is a public health professional at the Center for Health Empowerment in South Texas (CHEST), where she works at the intersection of community health, program development, evaluation, and health policy. Her work translates public health evidence into practical programs, tools, and systems that strengthen access to health and social resources across South San Antonio. Through evaluation, resource navigation, grant development, and cross-sector collaboration, she helps advance CHEST’s efforts to address the social and structural conditions that shape health outcomes.

Sofia earned her undergraduate degree in Cognitive Science from Case Western Reserve University, with minors in Biology and Chemistry, and her Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Management. At CWRU, she pursued interdisciplinary research across cognitive science, biomedical science, and public health. Beyond her academic work, she was deeply involved in student leadership and advocacy, collaborating with university administrators to elevate student voices in institutional decision-making. Together, these experiences shaped her interest in connecting scientific evidence, healthcare, public health, and systems-level change.

A San Antonio native, Sofia is particularly committed to advancing health equity in South Texas. She plans to pursue a career in medicine and hopes to integrate clinical practice, public health, and health policy to improve care and health outcomes for underserved communities.
